We are the Marvellous Moles

We are the Marvellous Moles 1

Moving from KS1 to KS2 can be a scary time but it also full of adventure and exciting new topics.  Our topics this year will include: The Golden Ticket, Let it Shine, Our World is amazing! Sticks, Stones and Mammoths, May the force be with you and I was there!

TERM 1

Term 1, saw the Marvellous Moles learn all about the golden ticket, with our key focus using Talk 4 Writing actions to help with our learning.  We have been story mapping chapters to enable us retell a story and then adapting the story map to create our own.

Throughout the term we have enjoyed reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which has been great fun and has helped us write our own chapter for the book. We have been learning different ‘sentence signposts’ to help us start sentences with our instructions on How to Trap an Oompa Loompa.

In our History this term, we have looked at the industrial revolution and how the Victorians impacted the food we are able to buy today. All the children agreed that they would not have wanted to go to a Victorian school and face the scary prospect of the cane!

In Science this term, we have focused on nutrition and the importance of eating a balanced diet to keep our bodies healthy. The children performed an investigation into the effects of different liquids on their teeth and the results made them all want to brush regularly!

In DT, we have looked at the importance of hygiene and food safety when handling and preparing food. The children had great fun making a Victorian sponge cake using a Victorian recipe. They have also had the opportunity to try different breads and made their very own bread sticks!!

The Marvellous Moles have worked extremely hard this term and are looking forward to term 2. Next term will be ‘Let It Shine’ where we will focus on light and shadows whilst learning our times tables.

TERM 2

This term our topic is called ‘Let it Shine’. The Marvellous Moles will be learning about the properties of Light.  We are looking forward to the term ahead.  Here is a summary of what we will be doing…

English -  Using 'Talk for Writing', we will retell and adapt the story ‘The owl who was afraid of the dark’, leading up to creating our own adventures stories. Later in the term, we will read the book ‘The Polar Express’ and will write a playscript of a new chapter!

Science - We will be taking a trip to the beach to study how the light reflects off the water’s surface and we are hoping to also see some Christmas lights, observing what we notice about these.

Design and Technology –  Using a range of tools and materials, we hope to make our own light emitting lanterns.

Geography – The Marvellous Moles will be locating counties and cities of the United Kingdom, using ordinance survey maps to build on their knowledge of the UK.
