Reader's Theatre

At our school, we use Reader's Theatre as an exciting and highly effective approach to developing reading fluency, comprehension, and writing skills across the school. This method transforms reading into a lively, interactive experience, where pupils bring texts to life by performing in front of their peers—without the pressure of memorising lines or using elaborate props.

Each half term, classes learn a short play script or adapt a favourite story or topic text ready for an in-class performance. This not only develops reading fluency and expression but also supports writing objectives, as pupils learn to write dialogue, structure scenes, and consider characterisation. We endeavour to link scripts to our wider curriculum, such as historical events or science topics, which makes learning richer and more purposeful.

Reader’s Theatre sessions are built into our weekly timetable. Children rehearse in small groups, focusing on using their voices to convey meaning, emotion, and character. Because there’s no acting or movement required, even the most reluctant readers feel safe to take part and grow in confidence. Children learn to project their voices, use intonation, and follow punctuation—all key skills for fluent reading.

Perhaps most importantly, it’s tremendous fun. The buzz in the classroom during rehearsals is infectious. Pupils laugh together, support one another, and celebrate their performances. We have seen improvements not just in reading fluency, but also in teamwork, speaking and listening, and a genuine love for stories and language. Teachers and teaching assistants also find the process enjoyable and rewarding, often joining in to model performance or support group rehearsals.

Reader’s Theatre has become a highlight of our literacy provision—it’s inclusive, engaging, and truly brings reading and writing to life for every child.
