Support Your Child

To support geography at home, utilise websites like National Geographic Kids and the Geographical Association for games, quizzes, and free resources. Incorporate geography into daily activities by discussing news events, identifying local land use, using Google Earth to explore places, and encouraging children to ask questions about the world to foster curiosity and understanding.

Incorporate Geography into Daily Life

  • Use a Map:

Use globes and maps to locate continents, countries, and cities, and practice reading maps to identify important places using symbols and coordinates.

  • Discuss Geography in the News:

Talk about current events like earthquakes, hurricanes, or local planning issues, focusing on their geographical impact.

  • Explore Your Local Area:

During walks, identify different types of homes, land use (parks, businesses, transport), and geographical features.

  • Ask "What if?" Questions:

Encourage critical thinking by asking questions that link to the environment and people's lives, such as "What if water stopped flowing from our taps?".

  • Watch and Read:

Use media like TV, films, magazines, and documentaries to spark curiosity about distant places.

Fostering a Geographical Mindset

  • Encourage Questions:

Prompt children to ask questions about the world and try to answer them together, fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity.

  • Connect to Stories:

Use stories and familiar places, like Paddington Bear and London, to make geographical concepts more relatable and memorable.

  • Understand the "Why":

Focus on why places are important, how they are changing, and how different places are connected, rather than just memorising facts.
